Vitamin C has been a long-standing beauty saviour in our skincare routines, and it will come as no surprise when you discover the impact it can have on your skin!

Why Vitamin C Serum is so Popular

With hundreds upon hundreds of studies into vitamin C, and its wide popularity due to the benefits; here’s why it’s so popular.

There are numerous advantages to Vitamin C, these include positive effects on our skin’s brightness and appearance. We love a fresh and beautiful serum to help pack our vitamin C into our routines. Did you know that the most common form of vitamin C is actually found in the form of a serum? This is where we can really use all that the product has to give, as serums typically contain higher concentration levels compared to other products! There is a recommended daily intake of a maximum of 2000mg of vitamin C in order for you to feel the full effects in a safe manner. We get most of our vitamin C from our food, although only a fraction works on our skin. That’s why a vitamin C serum is beneficial to target your skin alone.

The search term “vitamin C” was tapped into our search engines over one million times last year. That’s an astronomical increase and a clear desire for vitamin C packed products. We can’t get enough of the stuff! No matter your budget, you can still reap the rewards. Vitamin C serums can vary from around $18 all the way up to the hundreds and hundreds! There are many factors such as the type and packaging to think about when it comes to your very own serum, and concentration is also one of them.

Here are some vitamin C serum brands that are highly recommended by Dermatologists and have also been recommended by numerous publications:
  1. Skin Ceuticals | Vitamin C products
  2. Drunk Elephant | C Firma Day serum
  3. Glossier | Super Glow serum

There are hundreds of serums out there, but there’s no need to get overwhelmed! It’s ok to build yourself up to a higher concentration and level of product over time. Make sure to refine by your skin type and your skin’s needs when you’re shopping.

Daily Rituals: Adding Vitamin C Serum to Your Routine

I spoke with Ben May, the founder of Skin Woof to delve into exactly why vitamin C is a must have in your routine!

“Vitamin C is an antioxidant powerhouse which works to slow and reverse the rate of DNA damage. It does this by neutralising free radicals that cause oxidative stress to the skin which can lead to premature skin ageing. Vitamin C is scientifically proven to contribute to the normal formation of collagen in the body.” – Ben May, the founder of Skin Woof.

This helps our skin to appear more youthful, plump, and prevents it from sagging!

Natural collagen production declines every year. Ben states that if vitamin C is “applied topically and/or ingested it helps the body’s natural ability to produce more collagen.” This helps our skin to naturally remain young and fresh.

I also had the opportunity to speak with Gabriella, a content creator, columnist, and beauty blogger from the UK.

Our skin goes through so much every day, whether it is exposure to sunlight, general pollution, or everyday stress. We cannot control these natural occurrences; however, we can take preventative measures or make changes to restore our skin with tailored skincare products!

“Oxadative stress levels (which in short means the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in our bodies) is the main cause of why our skin can look dull and tired; vitamin C is the main ingredient which helps to give the boost our skin needs to look younger and fresher!”- Gabriella @ A is for Acne

So, if you’re looking to give your skin a youthful glow, then a vitamin C serum is a must. Another benefit of a vitamin C serum is that it helps to diminish dark patches. So, if you suffer with dark circles or light pigmentation problems; vitamin C serums can significantly improve skin quality through hydration. Ben May, the founder of Skin Woof, reiterates; “vitamin C helps to even out skin tone, significantly improve skin hydration and reduces damage caused by the sun.”

How to Use a Vitamin C Serum Effectively

A person holds an orange vial of vitamin C serum in their hand while sitting in a bathtub filled with orange and lime slices.

For noticeable effects, vitamin C needs to penetrate beneath the top layer of your skin. That’s why a vitamin C serum comes in handy. Before you pop on your moisturiser, make sure to add just a couple of drops of your favourite vitamin C serum to your skin.

A moisturiser and serum are both core steps of a successful skincare routine.

On the one hand, a moisturiser works on the top layer of your skin, commonly helping to smooth or plump. However, serums work beneath the top layer of your skin, helping to reverse unwanted effects of ageing, stress, etc, and they also help to prevent further damage. That’s why it’s always recommended to apply your serum first, then your moisturiser!

As you’re starting from the deeper levels of your skin and then working up to the surface. After popping the serum onto your skin, enjoy watching the magic unfold with regular use.

Vitamin C also helps to eliminate sun damage and it rejects UV rays! However, don’t forget to apply your suncream as well as your serum. They work in harmony and complement each other, but they are both doing different things for your skin.

Vitamin C serums work best when paired with the correct product types

According to Brooke Shunatona and Dr. Rachel Nazarian (a board certified dermatologist); vitamin C products are particularly effective when used with other antioxidants, such as vitamin E. if you’re looking for a new vitamin C serum, always look at your current routine and how vitamin C compliments your products, as well as your skin type.

Vitamin C for your skin type

If you have very sensitive skin or skin that’s particularly oily; a vitamin C serum isn’t typically recommended. However, there are certain types that when used lightly and in moderation, can still leave your skin feeling amazing. According to Dermatologist Dr. Patricia Wexler, the concentration of your vitamin C serum is an extremely important factor when it comes to your skin type. Read more about what types of vitamin C product will work for your skin.

There are two main types of vitamin C:

  • L ascorbic acid: This is a natural and active form of vitamin c, frequently found in our food e.g. fresh oranges! L ascorbic acid isn’t typically recommended for blemish prone skin!
  • D ascorbic acid: This form becomes active once it is applied to your skin! This is also a more stable form than L ascorbic acid.

Watch and discover more about L and D ascorbic acid.

How to store your vitamin C serum

Vitamin C can become quickly ineffective and unproductive when it meets sunlight or air. Whichever vitamin C product appeals to you and meets your needs must be packaged in a careful manner as to not be exposed to light or air. Make sure to store your serum in a cool, dark place to protect its effectiveness.

You could even get yourself a mini skincare fridge to store your favourite vitamin C products!

The Bottom line

So, that’s a roundup of everything that you need to know about vitamin C and how to choose your very own serum!
